Happy Birthday Thoroughbreds!

Racehorse_thoroughbred_birthday_Australia

Did you know that in Australia, every race horse has its birthday on the first day of August? That’s Friday 1st August this year.

In the northern hemisphere however, all thoroughbreds (race horses) celebrate their birthdays on the first day of January. The reason all thoroughbreds have the same birthday is so that their ages can be standardised for comparison (when racing) because historically there has been a lack of records of actual birth dates. Happy Birthday thoroughbreds!

The Queen loves horses too!

Happy Birthday Liz

Happy birthday Liz!

This year Australians celebrate Queen Elizabeth’s birthday over the weekend of 7-9th June (except in WA and Queensland).

People often ask why we bring out the birthday cake in June when the Queen’s birthday is actually on 21st April.  The fact is Australians have been celebrating the Queen’s Birthday since 1788 – well before Elizabeth II was born! King George IV was king in 1788 and was born on 4 June, so in actual fact, the celebrations probably began as a salute to the King.  A clash with Easter and Anzac Day also makes June a more palatable option for Aussies.

Regardless of whether it’s the correct time of year, or whether you’re a Republican or Royalist, Australians love a public holiday and usually celebrate this one in style.

Queen Elizabeth has a long association and love of horses

From an early age, Queen Elizabeth II has had a keen interest in horses.  At age 4 she was given her first horse, a Shetland pony named Peggy, which she learnt how to ride confidently by age 6.  By the time she was 18 she was an accomplished rider and has continued to ride for pleasure until very recently.

In her role as monarch, Elizabeth has also ridden in a ceremonial role.  From her first appearance as sovereign in 1947, she attended the annual Trooping the Colour ceremony on horseback.  For eighteen consecutive years from 1969 to 1986, the horse that carried her was a black mare named Burmese. From 1987 onwards she has attended in a carriage.

Horses have been one of Queen Elizabeth’s main leisure time activities, with a particular emphasis on the breeding of thoroughbreds for horse racing.  As of 2013, horses owned by the Queen have won over 1,600 races!  She owns many thoroughbreds, having inherited several from her father King George VI.  Her registered racing colours are a purple and scarlet jacket with gold braiding and a black cap.  These are the same silks as those used by her father and great-grandfather, King Edward VII.  The Queen takes a keen interest in the breeding of her horses and is the patron of the Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association.

As well as thoroughbreds, Elizabeth also breeds Shetland ponies at Balmoral in Scotland and Fell ponies at Hampton Court. In 2007 she opened a full-time Highland pony stud at Balmoral to enhance and preserve the breed.

Inspired to ride like the Queen?

Why not honour the Queen’s birthday this year in a most fitting way by taking a horse ride at Gunnamatta Trail Rides.  There’ll be no sidesaddle or crowns worn here, but you’ll feel majestic enough as you ride through our beautiful bushland or along our stunning beaches.
